The Pentagon | Wedges 2-5

The Pentagon, a National Historic Landmark, is the largest office building in the world, serving as the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Defense.  SBA as Lead Architect for a multi-disciplined design/build team provided the design for the complete renovation of four of the building’s five “wedges” totaling 4.5 million sf.

Commencing immediately following the 9/11 attack, the project addressed major infrastructure and operational deficiencies, including space utilization and building systems, as well as extremely high levels of new security, in accordance with the Pentagon’s goal to “Build for the Next 50 Years.” While maintaining full, uninterrupted DoD operations throughout the accelerated, 10-year construction process, the design/build team designed, abated, demolished, rebuilt, and turned over space at a blistering pace of one square foot every minute of every day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the life of the project.
