Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream
Washington, DC
The Milken Family Foundation is modernizing three historic buildings just steps from the White House to create a new museum dedicated to education, finance, and entrepreneurship, as well as provide office space and conference facilities for the Foundation and the Milken Institute.
Two National Register-listed historic bank buildings will house the new museum, both featuring exhibit space in their grand interior banking halls. 1501 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, historically known as the American Security & Trust Company building, and 1503-05 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, formerly the Riggs National Bank, will accommodate a museum program that includes exhibit space, an auditorium, offices, and support functions. In addition to a full exterior restoration, two new floors will be added above the existing roof. The neighboring structure at 730 15th Street, NW, a contributing building to DC’s Financial and Lafayette Square Historic Districts, will accommodate Milken Institute offices and a conference center. An atrium constructed over a closed alley will connect all three buildings. The project requires approvals from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, DC Historic Preservation Review Board, and DC Board of Zoning Adjustment.
