U.S. Department of the Interior Headquarters Modernization
Washington, DC
The 1.2 million sf modernization of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Headquarters involved six phases of renovation and restoration, during which the historic federal building remained fully operational.
SBA provided full A/E services as Prime, including project management, architecture, historic preservation, and construction administration services. The scope included a complete building systems replacement, life safety and accessibility improvements, and preservation of historic spaces. In addition, the building was updated to current GSA standards and integrated new sustainability and security measures. Four LEED certifications for the project include platinum certifications for the updated cafeteria and new child care center. The completed modernization provides over 2,000 DOI personnel with a comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable workplace that celebrates the history of this monumental federal building and the achievements of DOI.
